Overturned Semi-Truck Causes Major Traffic Delays in Thomas County, Georgia

THOMAS COUNTY, GA. – August 15, 2018 (wctv.com) According to an online news story from wctv.com, an overturned semi-truck caused serious traffic delays August 15 in Thomas County, Georgia, for more than two hours.*

The collision occurred on U.S. 19 in Thomas County. The semi-truck overturned near State Road 188, just east of Ochlocknee. Crews responded to the scene to turn the truck upright and tow it away. 

It is not clear what caused the collision, but the driver, who has not been identified, told officers that he fell asleep at the wheel. The overturn closed southbound traffic on U.S.19 and led to traffic delays for more than two hours.

Thomas County is located on the southern border of the state of Georgia. It has a population of approximately 45,000, and its major roadways include U.S. Route 19, U.S. Route 84, and U.S. Route 319.

According to data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, vehicle accidents in Thomas County have yo-yoed during the last several years. In 2012, a total of 1,406 vehicle accidents occurred in the county. That number steadily dropped during the next three years, coming down to 935 total vehicle accidents in 2015. In 2016, however, the number of accidents in Thomas County jumped back up to 1,497. These accidents led to 398 injuries.

During a five-year period between 2012 and 2016, the highest number of fatal vehicle accidents occurred in 2016, when 10 people died in motor vehicle crashes. Two of the fatal accidents that year were related to excessive speeding.
