7-Year-Old Boy Dies After Being Hit by Car in DeKalb County

August 24, 2018

DEKALB COUNTY, GA. – ( A 7-year-old boy died after being hit by a car in DeKalb County, Georgia, according to an online news report from

The collision occurred around 3 p.m. on a busy section of North Decatur Road in DeKalb County. Officials say the 7-year-old boy was trying to cross four lanes of traffic about half a mile from where he lived, when a vehicle struck him. The boy died from his injuries. He has been identified by police, but his name is withheld from this article for privacy reasons.

The DeKalb County Police Department says the driver of the vehicle, who has not been identified, was driving over a hill and could not see the boy. “[B]y the time she saw him, it was too late,” said Shiera Campbell with the DeKalb County Police Department.

Residents in the area say the roadway has a high potential for pedestrian accidents because of several uncontrolled areas. “There’s no stop sign, nobody is stopping cars, [they] just come down here flying,” said Richard Sanders, a resident in the county.

Campbell said the crosswalks are “pretty far apart” — about one-half mile between them. Some residents say there should be more crosswalks and safe crossing areas, especially considering the number of children who walk to and from schools and bus stops in the area.

The boy involved in the collision was wearing a backpack, and DeKalb County Schools confirmed he was a student at Dunaire Elementary. In a statement, the school district said: “We are heartbroken that one our students, a 7-year-old just beginning his life, passed tragically this evening. Our thoughts are with his family and the Dunaire Elementary community during this difficult time. We will offer support to students and staff in the coming days, and will stand with them in support.”
