22 People Killed in Highway Bridge Collapse in Genoa, Italy

August 19, 2018

GENOA, ITALY – August 14, 2018 (npr.org) According to an online news report from npr.org, a section of highway bridge in Genoa, Italy, collapsed August 14, leaving at least 22 people dead and several injured.*

On August 14, a long section of the Ponte Morandi bridge collapsed. The bridge is part of the busy A10 highway that runs over a river bed, shopping centers, factories, homes, and railroad tracks. A heavy rainstorm swept the area during the day, and a witness said the bridge was struck by lightning. One of the bridge’s central pillars crumbled and collapsed, sending cars and trucks crashing down.

Reports indicate about a dozen cars were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. About four people were pulled from the rubble alive, and 22 people are reported dead. Rescue and emergency workers number about 200 right now, searching through the debris, hoping to find more people alive. Crews are using dogs in the search to try to locate people.

Part of the bridge reportedly fell onto a warehouse. Photos from the incident show a commercial truck stopped just feet from the edge of the drop off where the bridge broke away. Another photo shows a large piece of bridge missing in the distance with a densely populated area of Genoa in the foreground.

The Ponte Morandi bridge was constructed in the late 1960s and measured more than 3,600 feet. It recently received renovations and repairs, which Italian roadway company Autostrade says included consolidating the viaduct’s base and installing a bridge crane. Autostrade said a thorough investigation will now take place to determine what caused the collapse.
