Motorcyclist Killed in a Motorcycle Accident on Interstate 85 in Atlanta, Georgia

August 15, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – August 14, 2018 (11alive.com) A motorcyclist died in a vehicle accident on Interstate 85 in Atlanta, Georgia, according to a news report from 11alive.com.*

The accident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. on I-85 in Atlanta. The motorcyclist reportedly veered into another lane and collided with the driver’s side of a vehicle. The impact caused the motorcyclist to be thrown from the bike, and the motorcyclist died from resulting injuries. It is not clear whether the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The motorcyclist has not been identified at this time. The driver of the car, who has also not been identified, reportedly stayed on the scene and spoke with police. Atlanta Police are continuing to investigate the accident and have not yet released additional information.

Since 2007, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, more than 10 percent of all traffic fatalities in the state of Georgia involved motorcyclists. In 2016, approximately 173 motorcyclists died in motor vehicle accidents, which represented a 26 percent increase in motorcyclist fatalities since 2014.

Lack of helmets is a continuing problem in Georgia, according to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, with incidents involving motorcyclists without helmets on the rise since 2013. In 2016, an estimated 10 motorcyclist fatalities involved un-helmeted riders. However, the number of un-helmeted riders seemed to decline after 2016.

In 2017, 209 motorcyclists were killed in vehicle crashes, and data indicate 3 percent of those people were not wearing helmets. So far in 2018, the Office indicates 264 people have died in motorcycle accidents in Georgia, three of whom were not wearing helmets.
