Friend of Atlanta Man Killed on Scooter Creates Memorial at Scene of Accident

August 15, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – August 9, 2018 ( A friend of a man struck and killed by an Atlanta police officer while riding a scooter has set up a memorial at the scene of the accident. The story is reported online by*

The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on August 8 at the intersection of Newcastle Street and Washington Place. Officer Ryan Chandler, 24, of the Atlanta Police Department reportedly ran the stop sign at the intersection and ran into a man who was on a motorized scooter. The man on the scooter, 59-year-old Marvin King, of Atlanta, died of his injuries. Initial investigation reveals King was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

One of King’s friends, Cecil Brown Lee, has set up a memorial to King at the site of the accident and hopes people will come to hold a vigil and remember King. Lee said he and King enjoyed riding scooters together, and that King was a kind-hearted man. Lee is hoping to obtain more items to decorate the memorial from King’s other friends and members of the community.

Chandler was not using emergency lights at the time of the accident, and witness reports indicate he was traveling at a high rate of speed. The Atlanta Police Department has suspended Chandler with pay and will take further action, pending the results of an investigation. The department has extended its condolences to the friends and family of King.

Georgia State Patrol is leading the investigation into the collision and has not yet released additional information. The state patrol will work in conjunction with the Atlanta Police Department on the investigation. It is not clear whether charges will be filed against Chandler.
