Georgia Cadets Save Man from Sinking Vehicle After Wreck

August 10, 2018

COWETA COUNTY, GA. – August 9, 2018 (af.mil) Two Georgia cadets saved a man from a sinking vehicle August 2 after he wrecked in a rural pond, according to a news report from af.mil.*

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on August 2, Cadet 1st Lt. Davis Laughlin and Cadet 2nd Lt. Nathaniel Justin Oakes, of the Peachtree City Falcon Field Composite Squadron, Georgia Wing Civil Air Patrol, drove upon a multi-vehicle accident in Coweta County, Georgia. The cadets stopped to see if anyone needed help, while Oakes’ mother, Jennifer, called 911.

They ran to the first car and confirmed everyone was all right, then heard someone yelling that a car had crashed into a field. The cadets ran into the field, crossed over a barbed-wire fence and saw taillights glowing in the water of a pond. They waded into the pond as a car began to sink farther down.

“We started getting close to the car, and the water started getting deeper and deeper, until the point where we had to swim,” Oakes said.

They kept swimming and finally reached the man. They found him disoriented and started yelling to get his attention and coax him into rolling down a window. He finally complied, and with water rushing into the vehicle, the cadets pulled the man out and brought him back to the pond’s bank. Paramedics and first responders were waiting there and stepped in to help.

Coweta County first responder Brett Osting said the cadets acted with great bravery. “They went above and beyond, going into the water in the pitch dark to get this guy out,” Osting said. “They didn’t even know him; he was a complete stranger.”

The cadets credited their training with Civic Air Patrol in keeping calm and acting quickly. Their commander, Maj. David Serafin, said he was “very proud” of the cadets’ “heroic, selfless service.”
