Former Georgia Police Officer Paralyzed in ATV Crash

August 10, 2018

AUSTIN, TX. – August 9, 2018 ( An Austin, Texas, police officer, who was formerly an officer in Georgia, was paralyzed August 4 in an ATV accident, according to an online story from*

On August 4, Officer Tammy Barrett with the Austin Police Department was vacationing in New Mexico and was involved in an accident on an all-terrain vehicle. She was reportedly riding the ATV and fell nearly 45 feet from a cliff, becoming pinned under the vehicle. She was trapped for several hours before emergency responders could free her.

Barrett was transported to the University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, where she underwent a 14-hour spinal surgery. At this time, according to the website for the organization Austin Cops for Charities, doctors have said Barrett will not walk again. However, doctors reportedly found some active fibers in her spine that are giving her family hope she will someday regain some movement in her lower body.

Barrett is reportedly in stable condition but will not be discharged for at least a week. She will then be transported back to Austin.

Before joining the Austin police force in 2008, Barrett served in the U.S. Army and was an officer with the Hinesville Police Department in Georgia. She is currently assigned to the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit in the Austin Police Department.

Austin Cops for Charities has initiated a donation drive to raise money for Barrett’s medical care and recovery expenses. Much of the money will go toward making accessible accommodations for her. Donations can be made on the organization’s website.
