Women Sue Uber For Failing to Suspend Driver After Sexual Assault

August 15, 2018

CHATTANOOGA, TN. – August 9, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, two Tennessee women are suing Uber for failing to suspend a driver after a complaint of sexual assault.*

The lawsuit, filed by two women in Hamilton County, Tennessee, regarding two separate incidents, alleges that Uber driver John Kyle Lane sexually assaulted the first woman when he picked her up on July 22, 2017. Following the assault, the woman reported the incident to police and to Uber. Uber failed to take action, however, and 15 days later, on August 6, 2017, Lane sexually assaulted the second women during an Uber ride. She also reported the incident to police and to Uber.

The first woman claims Lane dropped off her male friend then drove her to her home and grabbed her breast, exposed himself, and forced her to touch him. The second woman claims he asked if he could have sexual relations with her and her boyfriend, then exposed himself to her.

Both women say Uber told them it would investigate, but Uber did not suspend Lane’s access to the Uber app until six days after the second woman’s alleged assault. Their lawsuit says Uber “failed to exercise reasonable care in retaining Lane and continuing to allow him to drive its customers.”

Lane is a defendant in the civil suit and is also facing criminal charges in Hamilton County of sexual battery, stalking, and harassment. Further details about the criminal case were not reported.

It does not appear Uber has publicly responded to the allegations, and the company has not yet entered an answer to the civil complaint.
