UPDATE: Authorities Identify Man on Scooter Hit, Killed by Atlanta Police Officer

August 10, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – (wsbtv.com) According to an online news report from wsbtv.com, authorities have now identified the man who was struck and killed by an Atlanta police officer while riding a scooter.*

The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on August 8 at the intersection of Newcastle Street and Washington Place. Officer Ryan Chandler, 24, of the Atlanta Police Department reportedly ran the stop sign at the intersection and ran into a man who was on a motorized scooter. Chandler was not using emergency lights at the time.

The man has now been identified as 59-year-old Marvin King, of Atlanta. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with critical injuries and was pronounced dead. Chandler was not injured but was taken to the hospital.

A woman in the neighborhood, Melanie Gonzalez, said she witnessed the accident and observed Chandler driving at an excessive rate of speed in the wrong lane.

“He was on the wrong side of the street and ran right into him,” Gonzalez said. “He hit that man so hard, you could see from the impact of the windshield.”

Gonzalez felt from her experience of the incident that Chandler should be fired, and the police department should compensate King’s family.

The Atlanta Police Department has suspended Chandler with pay and will possibly take further action, pending the results of an investigation. Georgia State Patrol is leading the investigation into the collision and has not yet released additional information. The state patrol will work in conjunction with the Atlanta Police Department on the investigation. It is not clear whether charges will be filed against Chandler.
