Georgia Man Dies After Pushing Daughter Out of Path of Oncoming Car

August 19, 2018

WAYCROSS, GA. – August 14, 2018 (news4jax.com) A Georgia man died August 11 after heroically pushing his 4-year-old daughter out of the path of an oncoming car. The story is reported at news4jax.com.*

At approximately 8 p.m. on August 10, Dedrick Bacon’s 4-year-old daughter ran into the roadway on Knight Avenue in Waycross, Georgia. Bacon, 38, observed an oncoming car and rushed to push his daughter out of its path. The car then struck Bacon. He was taken to Memorial Satilla Health, then transferred to Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, where he died the following night.

The driver of the vehicle has not been identified at this time. Reports indicate she was from Blackshear, Georgia, and was not injured in the accident, though she was visibly upset. It is not clear whether she will be cited or charged in connection with the accident.

Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner asked reporters, “What do you call a man who throws himself into harm’s way to save a child?” He then answered his own question by saying, “A hero.”

Friends and family of Bacon have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for his funeral expenses. The page for the fund says that Bacon was a true hero, “a leader, motivator, a well[-]rounded man who loved everyone.” The page goes on to say that Bacon’s “personality and good spirit will forever live on in hearts and those that he made contact with.”

Waycross authorities are still investigating the collision and have not released additional information to the public at this time.
