At approximately 2:15 p.m. on August 7, the Dade County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy, Major Tommy Bradford, was setting up spike strips along Highway 11 and South Cedar Lane near Trenton, Georgia, in an effort to end a high-speed chase that began in DeKalb County, Alabama. The chase involved a burglary suspect driving a white pickup truck in excess of 90 mph. As Bradford was setting up the strips, the pickup involved in the chase struck him.
Bradford was airlifted to the trauma center at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga in critical condition. Authorities indicate he lost one of his legs in the collision. His current medical condition is not known.

Major Bradford is a former school resource officer for Dade County and is married with six children. On its Facebook page, the Dade County Sheriff’s Office posted a statement, saying: “Thank you so much for all the call, messages, Facebook posts, and prayers. Our Major selflessly put his life on the line to try to stop the vehicle, [which] was traveling in excess of 90 mph, from making it to downtown Trenton, and potentially harming an innocent bystander. Please continue to pray for him, his family, and our department.”
