Alcohol Likely Factor in Alabama Crash that Killed Woman and Unborn Child

August 09, 2018

FOLEY, AL. – August 6, 2018 ( A woman and her unborn child were killed August 5 in a head-on vehicle collision in Foley, Alabama. Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in the collision, according to an online news story from*

At approximately 9:45 p.m. on August 5, 57-year-old Debra K. Estep was driving a Mercury Villager northbound on County Road 20 in Foley. At some point (it is not clear when), Estep traveled into the southbound lane while still driving northbound. Near the area of Foley Beach Express, Estep collided head-on with a southbound vehicle.

Estep had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported to a local hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. A pregnant passenger in the southbound vehicle was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital, where both she and her unborn child died. The victim has not been identified at this time.

It is not clear whether the driver of the southbound vehicle, who has also not been identified, was injured in the crash. Estep’s current medical condition has not been reported, but it appears she has been discharged from the hospital and transferred into police custody. The crash is being investigated by the homicide unit of the Foley Police Department, and investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the collision. No additional information has been released at this time.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 29 people die every day in the United States from motor vehicle crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers. This breaks down to one alcohol-related vehicle accident fatality every 50 minutes. In 2016, the CDC indicates almost 10,500 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, which accounted for nearly 30 percent of all traffic-related deaths in the United States that year.
