Ohio Single-Vehicle Accident Results in Death of Passenger

August 10, 2018

FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH. – August 6, 2018 (whio.com) A female passenger in an Ohio vehicle accident died August 4, according to an online report from whio.com.*

At approximately 8:45 p.m. on August 4, a husband and wife from Trenton, Ohio, were traveling eastbound on Canal Road in their 1993 Honda Del Sol. In the 2300 block of Canal Road in Fairfield Township, Ohio, the Honda veered off the right side of the roadway and struck a metal utility pole.

The driver of the vehicle, Kenneth E. Cyrek (age not provided), was transported to UC Health West Chester Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the Fairfield Township Police Department. The passenger, 26-year-old Kayla D. Cyrek, died at the scene. The Butler County Coroner’s Office said she died of multiple traumatic injuries and ruled her death an accident after performing an autopsy.

Kenneth Cyrek’s current medical condition is not known. The cause of the accident is not clear. It appears only the Cyreks’ Honda was involved, and no other people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Fairfield Township Police Capt. Doug Lanier said few vehicle accidents occur on Canal Road, as it is “not a heavily traveled roadway.” Lanier said only about five vehicle crashes were documented on the road each year, and the road used to see fewer crashes than that. Most of the past accidents on Canal Road have been due to driver inattention or excessive speeding, Lanier said.

According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a total of 34,439 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States in 2016. These accidents resulted in the deaths of 37,461 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States. Ohio’s 2016 fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were 9.7 deaths per every 100,000 people and 0.95 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
