Tractor-Trailer Overturns in Walker County, Leaks Fuel Onto Highway

WALKER COUNTY, GA. – August 6, 2018 (wrcbtv.com) As reported by wrcbtv.com, a tractor-trailer overturned in Walker County, Georgia, on August 6, which caused fuel to spill out onto Highway 27.*

Georgia State Patrol says the incident occurred on August 6 at Highway 27 and North Longhollow Road. A tractor-trailer reportedly overturned across the northbound lanes of Highway 27, after which fuel from the truck started to spill onto the roadway.

Hazmat crews were called to the scene to clean up the fuel, and emergency crews worked to turn the tractor-trailer upright and clear the debris. All northbound lanes of Highway 27 were closed to State Line Road during the cleanup process. 

It is not clear how the accident occurred, and the driver of the tractor-trailer has not been identified. The driver’s condition is not known, as Troopers did not indicate whether he or she had been injured in the accident. Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate and has not released additional details at this time.  

Walker County is located in the northwestern corner of the state of Georgia and has an estimated population of 68,000. Approximately 1,200 to 1,300 vehicle accidents occur in Walker County each year, according to data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In 2016, a total of 1,390 vehicle accidents took place in the county, leading to injuries to almost 400 people and the deaths of nine people.

On average, around one-third of the fatal vehicle accidents that occur in Walker County each year involve either speeding or alcohol consumption on the part of the one of the drivers.
