Savannah Police Car Involved in Three-Vehicle Accident

August 15, 2018

SAVANNAH, GA. – August 6, 2018 (wjcl.com) A Savannah Police patrol car was involved in a three-vehicle collision August 6 near the Savannah Speedway, according to an online news report from wjcl.com.*

Georgia State Patrol says the accident occurred on the afternoon of August 6 on Ogeechee Road. Several people were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries, according to Troopers, but the extent of their injuries and current medical conditions are not known. One person reportedly suffered “serious” injuries.

The three-vehicle accident reportedly caused traffic delays in both directions near the speedway, but the scene was quickly cleared. Georgia State Patrol is investigating the collision and has not yet released additional information. The cause of the accident has not been determined, and none of the people involved in the crash, including the police officer, has been identified at this time.

Savannah is located in Chatham County, on the eastern border of the state of Georgia. In 2016, a total of 15,806 vehicle accidents occurred in Chatham County, according to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. These accidents led to 3,760 injuries and 43 deaths. More than half of the fatal accidents in the county that year involved alcohol or speeding.

According to a report by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, during the five-year period between 2010 and 2014, 78 police officers in the United States died in vehicle crashes while responding to a call for service. More than half of these deaths — 53 percent — were situations in which officers were responding to calls for help from another officer and crashed while traveling to the scene.
