Traffic Delays Expected From I-85 Construction in Lee County, Alabama

August 06, 2018

Lee County, AL - Travelers should be aware that the Alabama Department of Transportation predicts significant delays on I-85 in Lee County during an overnight construction project which is about to start, the Opelika-Auburn News is reporting. Crews were working on the roads on Friday, August 3,2018, around 8:00 pm.*

The project will begin on I-85 at the College Street exit and end at the Bent Creek Road exit. The DOT will start closing the shoulder of the road around 8:00 p.m. at Exit 51. The shoulder will be closed up to Exit 56. The DOT plans on completely slowing down traffic or bringing it to a halt with rolling roadblocks as their progress requires.

Law enforcement officers will conduct the rolling roadblocks. Roadblocks are necessary for construction crews to perform maintenance on the anchor bolts of Moore’s Mill Road Bridge.

The Alabama DOT and law enforcement officers remind drivers to proceed slowly and with extreme caution through the construction zones. These agencies also ask for drivers to exercise some patience with the anticipated heavy traffic.

I-85 in the Opelika-Auburn area has seen its share of serious car wrecks. This past July was a particularly deadly month on that stretch of road. On July 9, two residents of Duluth, Georgia died in a crash near Exit 50. Also, a traffic jam on July 25 leadsto a fatal accident when a 20-year-old woman was killed after a tanker carrying jet fuel rear-ended her car. The big rig slammed into the young woman and pushed her car into the bridge abutment. Multiple non-fatal accidents have occurred in that area as well, leading to massive traffic tie-upsand frustrating delays.
