Tractor-Trailer Crash Kills Man from Greenwood, Georgia

August 07, 2018

GREENWOOD COUNTY, GA- The reports that a man from Greenwood was tragically killed in a wreck on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. The man has been identified as 47-year-old Bryan Orlando Hackett.*

The crash occurred around 12 p.m. at the intersection of Whitehall Road and Highway 221. Hackett was driving on Whitehall Road and stopped at Highway 221. Hackett then drove his 2002 Cadillac into the intersection where his vehicle collided with the tractor-trailer, a 2015 Kenworth, which was traveling southbound on Highway 221.

No one else was traveling in the Cadillac at the time of the crash. Investigations into the cause of the collision are ongoing.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety states that most fatal crashes involving tractor-trailers kill occupants of passenger vehicles, and not people traveling in large trucks. Trucks create a major hazard on the roadway for people traveling in cars and other passenger vehicles. The sheer size of tractor-trailers creates the potential for devastating accidents. These large vehicles can weigh between 20 and 30 times as much as passenger vehicles. The six of trucks also makes it more difficult for them to maneuver or stop quickly. This means that trucks cannot avoid crashes as easily as smaller vehicles. In fact, when a truck tries to make a quick stop, it will travel between 20% and 40% farther than cars would inthe same amount of time. In bad weather when roads are slippery, the time it takes a large truck to stop can be even greater.

It is important that people use caution whendriving around trucks. In 2016, 3,986 people died in accidents involving large trucks, and most of those people were traveling in passenger vehicles.
