August 08, 2018

JACKSON COUNTY, AL- According to a woman from Fort Payne sadly died in a collision close to the Alabama-Georgia State line at around 4:30 a.m. The victim was identified as 39-year-old Denise Santiago. Santiago was driving a 2008 Pontiac when her vehicle collided with a pickup truck.*

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash.

Traffic accidents cause tens of thousands of deaths in the United States every year. In 2016, 37,461 people died in vehicle collisions. The number of fatalities showed an increase of 2.2% as compared with the previous year.

Leading causes of vehicle accidents include distracted driving, drowsy driving, drunk driving, speeding, and failing to use a seat belt. Distracted driving has been a major cause of fatal crashes as smartphones have become ubiquitous, but in 2016, the number of people killed in distracted driving accidents dropped by 2.2%. Drowsy driving-related deaths also dropped. Unfortunately, deaths attributed to drunk-driving, speeding, and not using a seat belt all increased.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 94% of all serious car accidents are the result of human errors. As part of the Road to Zero Coalition, the NHTSA works with other agencies to make changes to dangerous driving-related behaviors. New technologies are also helping to reduce the number of crashes, and the NHTSA believes that advancements could eventually eliminate human error related accidents.
