When the vehicle swerved, it struck 35-year-old Christopher Varnadore, who was in the emergency lane. Varnadore’s vehicle was disabled on the side of the road. Another person with Varnadore was not hit by the car.

Emergency responders brought Varnadore to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. Varnadore sustained several injuries, but is now in stable condition.

Mallory Reeves, 27, was driving the vehicle that hit Varnadore. Reeves did not suffer any injuries.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the accident and has not yet filed any charges.

A report conducted by the Governors Highway Safety Association indicates that pedestrian fatalities have been increasing across the United States in recent years. Nationally, close to 6,000 pedestrians were killedtwo years in a row. Georgia ranked 16 out of all states with its number of pedestrian deaths.

Georgia is working to improve the safety of its streets for people traveling on foot. The state’s action plan includes “target corridors for assessment and counter measures, conducting road safety audits, and conducting school road safety audits.”

Within just a few years, the percent of pedestrian car accident deaths went from 11% to 16%. Some blame the trend on distractions caused by smartphones and increased driving under the influence resulting from the legalization of marijuana.
