On Person Hospitalized Following Accident on Chestnut Hill Road in Cumberland County

August 08, 2018

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, GA - According to, one person was injured in a two-vehicle collision in Cumberland County on August 1, 2018.*

The accident happened on Chestnut Hill Road during the afternoon. The report indicates that Diana H. Conway, 61, of Lenox, reportedly drifted over the center line of Chestnut Hill Road and struck a 2001 Honda Civic driven by Eric Oakes, 31. Oakes was traveling in the opposite direction. A passenger in the Civic, Christine Gibson, 34, sustained injuries in the collision and was transported to Cumberland Medical Center by ambulance.  Thankfully, Gibson’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The collision could have been much worse. Head-on collisions are often fatal because of the incredible force that occurs when two vehicles crash after traveling toward one another. The force involved in a head-on collision is multiplied because of the added speeds of both vehicles. When a vehicle hits something at 80 miles per hour, the force is four times as great as when a vehicle strikes something at 40 miles per hour. So while people might believe a crash at 80 miles per hour would be twice as bad as a crash at 40 miles per hour, the reality is that it is four times as devastating.

Studies have indicated that the likelihood of surviving a head-on collision reduces drastically when the speed of the vehicles is more than 43 miles per hour. This bit of information could be used to inform roadway design. In order tolower the risk of roadway fatalities, any road with a speed limit above 40 miles per hour should have some form of separating feature between lanes traveling in the opposite direction.
