Driver Whose vehicle Collided with Train, Killing Three Passengers, Facing Charges

August 04, 2018

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, GA- Wsbtv.com reports that the driver of a vehicle that was struck by a train on Monday, July 30, 2018, is being charged in the accident. The driver, identified as Doreen Carter, was the vehicle’s only survivor. She is still in the hospital.*

The victim’s of the crash included 40-year-old Lidonda Carter, 18-year-old Santan’ia McDowell, and 16-year-old Mackenzie Mack. The driver, Doreen, was Santan’ia’s mother and Lidonda’s sister.

Rebecca Arnold, who is Carter’s sister, lost both a sister and a niece in the crash.

According to witnesses, the driver attempted to drive across the tracks after the gates had gone down. The car was smashed into by a freight train. One witness described the scene, saying that the engine and debris from the vehicle went flying.

The family has stated that they want to focus on remembering their loved ones and do not want to talk about the charges that are pending against Doreen.

Railroad crossing collisions have gone down significantly in the past few decades. When Operation Lifesaver, an organization that promotes train safety and awareness, was founded in 1972, there were about 12,000 train, and passenger vehicle crashes on average every year. The number dropped by 81% by 2014, when there were 2,286 such collisions.

In 2017, Georgia ranked 5thin the nation for the states with the most railway crossing collisions. There were 104 collisions in the state resulting in 36 injuries and four fatalities. Nationally, in 2017, there were 2,105 railway crossing accidents, 274 deaths, and 807 injuries. Crashes between trains and cars lead to a much higher rate of fatalities for vehicle occupants than collisions between vehicles and other vehicles.
