I-95 Crash Kills Two, Injures Four in Brunswick, Georgia

August 04, 2018

BRUNSWICK, GA- reports that a crash involving a tractor-trailer and an SUV killed two people and injured four in the Brunswick area on Interstate 95.*

The deadly crash occurred on Tuesday, July 31, 2018. Georgia State Patrol reports that the fatalities included two occupants of the SUV, a six-year-old boy, anda 50-year-old woman. GSP stated that both vehicles were driving southbound on I-95 when the SUV struck the back of the tractor-trailer. Four other individuals in the SUV suffered injuries and were transported to the hospital. The nature of the injuries and the condition of the injured persons has not yet been reported.

Troopers are investigating the cause of the collision.

Accidents involving large trucks are highly deadly. These vehicles can weight between 20 and 30 times what a passenger vehicle weighs. The difference in weight and mass means that when a car or other passenger vehicle collides with a truck, the people in the passenger vehicle are far more likely to be injured or killed than anyone traveling in the truck. Another important fact for drivers to remember is that trucks cannot stop quickly. These large vehicles will continue to travel about 20% - 40% farther than passenger vehicles once they have applied their brakes. The difference can be even greater in inclement weather where the roadways are wet.

In 2016, accidents involving large trucks killed 3,986 people in the United States. Only 17% of the people killed in these crashes were occupants of the trucks. Occupants of passenger vehicles made up 66% of fatalities, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists account for the remaining 16%.
