Train Hits Car in South Fulton Killing Three in Atlanta, Georgia

August 04, 2018

ATLANTA, GA- reports that three people died on Monday, July 30, 2018, when their vehicle was hit by a freight train at a South Fulton County railroad crossing. One person in the vehicle survived with only minor injuries.*

The crash happened at about 4 p.m.near Buffington Road and Roosevelt Highway. The victims were identified as 40-year-old Lidonda Carter, 18-year-old Santania McDowell, and 16-year-old Mackenzie Mack.

Witnesses to the crash say that the driver attempted to beat the train by driving past the railroad crossing gate that was already lowered. The Chevy Impala was struck by the train and thrown.

The accident is being investigated.

For obvious reasons, collisions involving trains are far deadlier than collisions involving motor vehicles alone. The occupants of a vehicle involved in a collision with a train are about 20 more likely to be killed than are people involved in crashes with other passenger vehicles.

According to Operation Lifesaver, drivers should remember that trains are closer than they appear and that they are traveling faster than it looks. It is important never to tryto beat a train. It is too difficult to assess the speed, and the “even if you tie, you lose.” Of course, because of their size and mass, trains cannot stop quickly in emergency situations. In fact, a train moving 55 miles per hour can take over a mile to stop. It is also important to remember that more than one train can be traveling on tracks at the same time. Just because one train is leaving does not mean another train is not coming.
