August 10, 2018

WILLIAMSBURG, KY- writes that a car accident led to the arrest of a fugitive from Georgia. The accident occurred on Friday, July 27, 2018, at about 6:51 p.m.*

The fugitive was identified as 34-year-old Duston M. Oyer. Oyer waived extradition to Georgia.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Brush Arbor Road and Main Street. When police arrived at the scene of the crash, they took information from the individuals involved. Oyer was traveling as a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the accident. The suspect’s name was flagged on the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, and police discovered that he had a warrant out for his arrest in Georgia.

A bench warrant was issued for Oyer in Georgia after he did not show for a court date in a felony case from 2016. A charge of bail jumping was later filed because while he was out on bond, Oyez fled the state.

Friday’s accident led to another charge against Oyer for “first-degree possession of a controlled substance.” An officer noticed a bag of white powder at Oyer’s feet, and according to officers, Oyer told the police that the bag contained cocaine.

On Monday during his arraignment at the Whitley District Court, Oyer entered a not guilty plea in regard to the drug charge. The judge appointed a public advocate to serve as Oyer’s representative. A preliminary hearing is scheduledfor August 6, 2018. The judge set a $10,000 cash bond.

The NCIC is a database of crime-related information. Among other things, this database is used to assist law enforcement in apprehending criminals. In 2015, the average number of searches per day was 12.6 million.
