Rollover crashes have a high rate of fatalities. People have a greater chance of dying in a rollover crash than in other types of crashes. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 9.1 million traffic collisions happened on American roadways in 2010. Out of those crashes, 2.1% involved rollovers. Despite the small percentage of crashes involving rollovers, 35% of vehicle-related deaths happened in rollover crashes.

Many of those killed in rollover collisions were not using seat belts. Out of all rollover victims, 69% were not using seat belts. Fortunately, seat belt usage rates have been rising continuously. The NHTSA reports that by 2016, 90.1% of people in the United States use their seat belts while riding in a vehicle.
