In 2016, 5,190 people were killed while working. That works out to 99 people being killed at work each week, or 14 people every day.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) keepstrack of work-related fatalities and strives to reduce the number of people killed while on the job. OSHA has set regulations and safety standards for industries that are designed to make workers safer. The administration’s work has shown results over the last few decades. In 1970, 38 people were killed at work every day. Thankfully, injuries and illnesses related to work have since declined significantly.

However, there are still industries known for being particularly dangerous. Construction work is considered one of the most dangerous areas in which a person can work. In 2016, 21.1%, or about one out of every five worker deaths occurred within the construction industry. Work involving heavy equipment and large machines play a part in many of these tragic accidents.
