Girl, Age 10, Dies in Montgomery, Georgia Car Wreck

August 04, 2018

MONTGOMERY, GA- reports that a 10-year-old girl died in a car crash in Montgomery County on Tuesday, July 31, 2018. The accident occurred on Highway 231 at about 1:30 p.m.*

According to state troopers, the vehicle that the girls weretraveling in left the roadway and struck a tree. The victim, who is from Georgia, has not been identified. Troopers reported that the child was not buckled at the time of the crash. She was declared dead at the scene of the wreck.

The three other occupants of the vehicle, including the driver, survived but sustained injuries. The cause of the crash has not been reported.

Seat belts are effective in reducing the likelihood of being killed or seriously injured in a car accident. About 40,000 people are killed every year in the United States in vehicle collisions. More people under the age of 34 die in car accidents than from any other cause. The only state that does not have a seat belt law is New Hampshire, but states vary in what their laws cover.

Georgia has a primary enforcement law for seatbelts. This means that if a police officer sees someone violating the seat belt law in Georgia, that officer can pull over the vehicle and issue a citation even if the driver has not violated any other laws.

Georgia’s law includes exemptions for passengers traveling in the back of a vehicle once they have reached the age of eight. Of course, all passengers should be restrained regardless of their age. The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety also recommends that children 12 and under sit in the back seat of the vehicle.
