Ethanol Spill On Busy Highway Attributed to Careless Driver

August 05, 2018

AUGUSTA, GA- reported that a fuel tanker flipped over on I-520 Monday in Augusta. The fuel tanker truck spilled 8,500 gallons of ethanol onto the roadway and sent the driver of the fuel truck to the hospital with injuries. Law enforcement authorities initiated a reward incentive for information leading to the cause of the near environmental calamity. Law enforcement officials believe the driver of another vehicle is responsible for the fuel tanker crash.*

The accident happened Monday, July 30, 2018, around 3:00 p.m. on I-520, which is also known as the Bobby Jones Highway. The truck overturned near Lovers Lane. Officials closed both sides of the road to traffic as they fought to contain the hazardous ethanol from polluting the Savannah River situated near the highway. Instead, the entire payload of ethanol, all 8,500 gallons, spilled onto the road and collected in a storage pond adjacent to the road surface. Experts estimate that if the truck flipped merely 300 yards west of where it did, the crash would have had a tremendous environmental impact.

The fuel truck driver suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Witnesses believe that the driver of another truck that was towing a pickup truck is responsible for the wreck. Witnesses said that they saw the cover of the towed truck fly off and hit the fuel tanker's windshield. The tanker driver then lost control over his vehicle, causing it to turn over and dump its contents into the road.

Law enforcement officers from Richmond County did not adopt the initial story as the truth. However, the owner of the trucking company that ran the fuel tanker has issued a $10,000 reward for information that leads to identifying the truck that caused the crash. Law enforcement officers from Richmond County continue to investigate the cause of the accident. Fortunately, the truck driver is expected to survive his injuries.
