19-Year-Old Man Dies In Paulding County Hit-and-Run Crash

PAULDING COUNTY, GA- WSB-TV 2 in Atlanta is reporting that a 19-year-old man previously diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome was run down in Rockmart, located within Paulding County. The fatal accident occurred on Sunday, July 30, 2018, in the evening. No one has come forward at this time to identify the driver or the passenger who fled the scene.*

According to WSB-TV 2, the Georgia State Patrol, who is assisting the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation, Monday, tweeted out photographs of two young adults, one male, and one female, who may have also been in the same convenience store that the victim was in moments before the crash. Law enforcement officers are interested in speaking with these two individuals.

The initial investigation has revealed that the victim who died in the crash, Joshua Smith, walked to a local gas station to buy oil for his mother’s car. Smith had left the gas station around 10:20 p.m. and was walking in the roadway on Holly Springs Road when a truck ran him down.  Witnesses to the accident say that the truck driver was traveling west and struck Smith. The truck fled the scene immediately after the crash. Witnesses described the truck as being dark-colored. Additionally, witnesses said that Smith might have been walking in the road when he was hit. 

Georgia roads have grown increasingly more dangerous for pedestrians. According to, fatal pedestrian accidents in Georgia are 16% higher in 2018 than in 2017.  As of June 5, 2018, 111 Georgia pedestrians died in crashes involving motor vehicles. In 2017, 260 people died while walking in motor vehicle crashes. 

Georgia ranked fourth in the U.S. for most fatal hit-and-run accidents in 2016. There were 72 fatal hit-and-run crashes that year in Georgia.
