Tragic Train Collision Kills Three Women on Buffington Road in South Fulton

August 05, 2018

SOUTH FULTON, GA- 11Alive.com is reporting that a third woman who was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with a train has died. The crash happened around 4 p.m. on Monday, July 30, 2018, at the train track crossing on Buffington Road, close to Roosevelt Highway. Two other young women were pronounced dead at the scene on Monday.*

South Fulton Police Department spokesperson Lt. Derrick Rogers said that Lidonda Carter, 40, Santania McDowell, 18, and Mackenzie Mack, 16, all perished in the wreck. The driver, who has not been identified at this time, survived the crash.

A witness to the collision says that the driver of the Chevrolet Impala approached the rail crossing and sped around two cars that were stopped. The witness said that it looked like the driver tried to “beat the train.” Unfortunately, the train was quickly on top of the Impala. The train slammed into the passenger car with incredible force and pushed the car down the tracks.

The witness said she was at a stop light when she saw the crash. She said she ran over to the crushed car to find only the driver responsive to the witness. Paramedics and other emergency personnel found the driver alive along with one of the now deceased women. The other two were obviously deceased. First responders removed the surviving women. Unfortunately, one of them died at a local hospital.

Photographs of the scene show the black Chevy Impala crumbled and cast off of the road. Crossing gates are installed at the railroad crossing on Buffington Road. There is no indication whether the signals and gates were working at the time of the crash. However, considering two cars were stopped ahead of the Impala, it stands to reason at least of the signals worked. The crash remains under investigation by South Fulton police and CSX Railroad. Police have not filed criminal charges against the driver at this time.
