Former Massachusetts Basketball Star Dies in Vehicle Crash

August 02, 2018

LOWELL, MA. – July 27, 2018 (660news.com) A former Massachusetts high school basketball star was killed in a vehicle accident July 26, according to an online news story from 660news.com.*

Officials say 52-year-old Ramon “Chung” Rivera was involved in a tragic rear-end vehicle collision July 26. A vehicle reportedly struck Rivera’s SUV from behind, and Rivera died at the scene. It is not clear where the collision occurred.

People who knew Rivera, including friends and former coaches, said he was the best basketball player that Lowell, Massachusetts, had ever seen. He led the Lowell High School basketball team to two Eastern Massachusetts championships during his time at the school from 1981 to 1985. Rivera reportedly scored 1,459 career points in high school, then went onto play a year at the University of Houston and professional ball in Puerto Rico. More recently, Rivera helped launch youth basketball programs and mentored young players.

The collision remains under investigation, and no additional information has been released at this time. The cause of the crash is not yet known, and no charges have been filed.

According to an article from The Washington Post, about 1.7 million rear-end collisions occur in the United States every year. These are the most common type of vehicle accident in the nation, leading to 1,700 deaths and 500,000 injuries. The National Transportation Safety Board estimates that 80 percent of these collisions could be avoided with collision-avoidance systems, like emergency braking systems, available today on many types of vehicles. The NTSB has been encouraging car manufacturers to make these systems standard in all vehicles.
