I-20 Along Georgia-South Carolina Border is Deadly Stretch of Road

August 02, 2018

GEORGIA – July 27, 2018 (wrdw.com) According to an online article from wrdw.com, a stretch of Interstate 20 from Georgia to South Carolina is the site of numerous accidents and fatalities every week.*

Approximately 80 miles of I-20 near the Georgia-South Carolina Border is known for high numbers of collisions and major traffic delays, particularly along the bridge that crosses the river at the state line. During 2017, a total of 192 vehicle accidents occurred on I-20 between Exit 199 in Georgia and Exit 1 in South Carolina. That works out to one crash every two days in a mere two-mile stretch of interstate.

The other parts of I-20 that seem to present the most danger include Exit 190 at Grovetown, Exit 194 at Belair Road, and Exit 196 at Bobby Jones Expressway. Approximately 50 to 60 accidents occurred at each of these areas in 2017.

The likelihood of an accident at one of these areas on I-20 seems to depend on the day of the week and the time of day. The most vehicle accidents happen on weekdays during the hours of 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., when most people are commuting home from work. Friday afternoons appear to be the deadliest time of every week on I-20 because drivers are rushing to start their weekends.

Drivers who take this route regularly are used to lane closures, long delays, and bumper-to-bumper traffic during rush hour. But they can expect conditions to be worse next year, as this very stretch of I-20 is set to undergo construction. It might be beneficial to start planning alternate routes and using them now.
