Gwinnett County Fatality Accident Might Have Been Related to Medical Emergency

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA. – July 27, 2018 ( As reported online by, a fatal incident on Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County, Georgia, might have been related to a medical emergency.*

The collision reportedly took place in the early morning hours of July 27 on I-85 near Jimmy Carter Boulevard. Originally, reports indicated the incident was a wreck involving more than one vehicle, but it now appears the driver of one vehicle suffered a medical emergency and slid off the edge of the roadway. 

Gwinnett County Police said the car involved did not strike any other vehicles and left the road at a low rate of speed. Only minor damage to the vehicle occurred. Officers and paramedics found the driver unresponsive and performed CPR until he arrived at a nearby hospital. The driver, who has still not been identified, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. 

Limited information is available about what might have occurred, but officials have indicated that drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the incident. 

Two lanes of I-85 were closed following the incident to allow crews room at the scene. Traffic was backed up for some time beyond Pleasant Hill Road. 

Gwinnett County is located in the north-central portion of the state of Georgia. The county has an estimated population of more than 920,000, and its major roadways include Interstate 85, Interstate 985, U.S. Route 23, U.S. Route 29, and U.S. Route 78. 

According to data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, numerous vehicle accidents occur in Gwinnett County every year. In 2016, a total of 41,527 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 9,436 injuries and 61 deaths.
