Uber Driver Killed in Head-On Collision in North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, NC. – July 30, 2018 (wsoctv.com) A head-on vehicle collision July 28 in Charlotte, North Carolina, resulted in the death of an Uber driver, according to an online news report from wsoctv.com.*

On July 28, 31-year-old Juan Octavio Reyes was driving a 2010 Ford Escape northbound on Runnymede Lane in Charlotte. Reyes was a driver for Uber and was carrying a passenger to a destination at the time. Near Selwyn Elementary School, a southbound 2006 Subaru crossed the centerline of the roadway and struck Reyes’ vehicle head-on. 

Emergency responders pronounced Reyes dead at the scene. His passenger, who has not been identified, was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A passenger in the Subaru, who has also not been identified, was also transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. (A report on patch.com identifies the Uber passenger as 25-year-old Meredith Lauren Turner and the Subaru passenger as 46-year-old Wilmer Max Guevara.)  

The driver of the Subaru, 39-year-old Jimmy Gallarday, was arrested at the scene. Authorities report he was speeding at the time of the crash and was under the influence of alcohol. Gallarday has now been charged with felony homicide by vehicle and two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle. 

The crash is still under investigation, and no additional information has been released. Uber has said it will cooperate fully with the investigation. 

Reyes was reportedly a father and had just celebrated his 31st birthday with his family three days before the crash. An obituary has not yet been released, but his family is planning funeral services to take place on an unannounced date.
