Five-Vehicle Crash on I-95 in Richmond Hill Leaves at Least One Dead

RICHMOND HILL, GA. – July 27, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, at least one person has died as a result of a five-vehicle crash July 26 on Interstate 95 in Richmond Hill, Georgia.*

On the afternoon of July 26, five vehicles collided on I-95 South near mile marker 87, by the Highway 17 exit in Richmond Hill. The crash involved two tractor-trailers and three passenger vehicles. One of the passenger cars and one of the tractor-trailers caught on fire after the impact, and the driver of the car died on the scene. Another car flipped over a concrete barrier and landed on the train tracks below the interstate. 

Authorities indicate five people were transported to nearby hospitals. The extent of their injuries and their current conditions are unknown at this time. None of the people involved in the collision has been identified, and the cause of the accident has not been released. 

Crews worked to clear the crash from the afternoon on July 26 into the early morning hours of July 27. All southbound lanes of the interstate reopened around 1:30 a.m. July 27. 

Georgia State Patrol and the Richmond Hill Police Department are investigating the accident and have not yet provided additional details to the public. 

Richmond Hill is located in Bryan County in the southeastern portion of the state of Georgia. According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, the number of vehicle accidents in Bryan County has increased during the last several years. A total of 937 vehicle accidents occurred in the county in 2016, compared to 287 in 2012. The 2016 accidents resulted in 275 injuries and 13 fatalities.
