Heavy Rains Cause Several Accidents in Burke County in Georgia

BURKE COUNTY, GA. – July 28, 2018 ( Heavy rains and flooding caused several accidents in Burke County, Georgia during the weekend of July 28, according to an online news report from*

Four crashes reportedly occurred in Burke County between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on July 28. One of these accidents resulted in a fatality. The fatality crash involved a single vehicle and occurred near the intersection of Highway 80 and Highway 23, near Shell Bluff. The driver, 47-year-old David Michael Chapman, reportedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed. The vehicle then rolled several times, and Chapman was ejected. 

Emergency responders transported Chapman to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Authorities say the rain and partially flooded roads were to blame for Chapman’s losing control of the vehicle. 

Another crash occurred around the same time on Highway 25, near Cohen Road. This vehicle collision knocked down a power pole, causing an outage for numerous customers north of Waynesboro. The power company was able to resolve the power outage by about 12:30 a.m. No additional details about the accident were reported.

Burke County is located on the eastern border of the state of Georgia. Geographically, it is one of the largest counties in the state, but it has a small population for its size: approximately 22,500. A total of 661 vehicle accidents occurred in Burke County in 2016, according to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. These accidents resulted in 150 injuries and eight deaths. Half of the fatal accidents that year were related to alcohol.
