UPDATE: Authorities Say Texting Not Involved in Fatal Moultrie Crash

MOULTRIE, GA. – July 27, 2018 ( Authorities say a July 26 collision in Moultrie, Georgia, that killed a man and injured a woman did not involve texting while driving, according to an online report from*

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on July 26, 68-year-old Ernest Blackburn, of Doerun, Georgia, was traveling on Tallokas Road in Moultrie. Georgia State Patrol Troopers indicate Blackburn suddenly crossed the centerline of the roadway in his Dodge Caravan and struck a Chevy Monte Carlo that was traveling in the opposite direction. 

Blackburn was transported to Colquitt Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Monte Carlo, Crystal Slaughter (age not provided), was transported to Archbold Hospital with reportedly serious injuries. Her current medical condition is not known. Neither of the vehicles had any passengers at the time of the crash. 

Georgia State Patrol is investigating the collision and has not yet released additional information. It is not clear what caused Blackburn to cross the centerline of the road, but Troopers have now indicated he was not impaired, and he was not texting while driving. 

Moultrie is located in Colquitt County, Georgia. According to crash data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Colquitt County saw sporadic increases in the number of annual vehicle accidents from 2012 to 2016. In 2012, 191 vehicle accidents occurred in Colquitt County. The following year, the total number of accidents jumped to 920. 

In 2014, 749 vehicle accidents occurred in the county. Accident numbers then stayed relatively unchanged leading to 2016. From 2012 to 2016, vehicle accidents in Colquitt County resulted on average in about 187 injuries and about 10 fatalities.
