Husband and Wife Killed in Head-On Collision in Gwinnett County, Georgia

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA. – July 28, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a husband and wife died July 27 after a head-on vehicle collision in Gwinnett County, Georgia.*

At approximately 8:30 p.m., 51-year-old Jose Banuelos Elizondo and 51-year-old Gema Gallegos Lopez, both of Lilburn, Georgia, were traveling southbound on Singleton Road in Gwinnett County. They reportedly lost control of their vehicle and crossed into oncoming traffic. A northbound vehicle then crashed into their car. 

Elizondo was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later tragically died from his injuries. Lopez died at the scene. 

The driver of the second vehicle, who has not been identified, was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

A third vehicle was reportedly involved, as well, sustaining damage from debris scattered during the collision. The driver of this vehicle was not injured. 

The Accident Investigation Unit of the Gwinnett County Police Department is investigating the crash and has not released additional information at this time. It is not clear what initially caused the couple to lose control of their vehicle.  

Gwinnett County is located in the north-central portion of the state of Georgia. The county has an estimated population of more than 920,000, and its major roadways include Interstate 85, Interstate 985, U.S. Route 23, U.S. Route 29, and U.S. Route 78. 

According to data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, numerous vehicle accidents occur in Gwinnett County every year. In 2016, a total of 41,527 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 9,436 injuries and 61 deaths.
