Couple Flees Scene with Children After Causing Fatal Wreck in Gwinnett County

August 04, 2018

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA. – July 29, 2018 ( A couple who caused a fatal wreck July 22 in Gwinnett County, Georgia, reportedly fled the scene on foot, carrying their three children. An online news story on reports the details of the accident.*

Shortly before noon on July 22, 80-year-old Will Hodges, of Chamblee, Georgia, was driving in Norcross, Georgia, when his pickup truck was suddenly struck by an SUV. The driver of the SUV, Maurilio Montoya Pena, 44, reportedly ran a red light at the intersection of South Peachtree Street and Jimmy Carter Boulevard and crashed into the driver’s side of Hodges’ pickup.

Witnesses say that following the crash, Pena and his wife, who has not been identified, exited the vehicle, grabbed their three children from the SUV, and ran away from the scene on foot. Hodges was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died later that day.

“If just an accident happened, it’d be one thing; I could get over that,” Hodges’ son, Mark, told reporters. “But leaving him there to die, that’s when I get angry.”

Pena turned himself in to authorities four days after the accident, on July 26. He is now facing criminal charges, including vehicular homicide and driving without a license. He is currently in the Gwinnett County Jail on an immigration hold. His wife is expected to turn herself in, as well, after which she will also face charges related to the accident, including conspiracy and leaving the scene of an accident.

Hodges owned Will’s Auto Machine Shop in Chamblee. Mark, who helped Hodges run the family business, said his father was his “best friend.”
