West Point, GA, Collision Results in One Fatality, Multiple Injuries

WEST POINT, GA. – July 27, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a vehicle accident July 27 in West Point, Georgia, resulted in the death of one person and injuries to several others.* 

The accident involved a single SUV carrying six people. The SUV was traveling southbound on Interstate 85 in West Point and suddenly hit a guardrail near Exit 6. The SUV then flipped over the guardrail and landed in an embankment 10 feet below. 

West Point Fire Department Chief Mitt Smith described the incident as a “very unfortunate scenario” and said there were multiple ejections from the vehicle. Some of the victims were children, Smith said. In total, four people were ejected during the crash. They were airlifted to Atlanta-area hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Their current medical conditions are not known. 

Another person was walking around the scene when emergency responders arrived. He was transported via ambulance to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A sixth person, who was not ejected from the vehicle, died on the scene. 

The West Point Fire Department, West Point Police Department, Lanett Fire and EMS, Troup County EMS, Troup County Sheriff’s Office, Troup County Fire Department, Air Methods and Air Evac, and Georgia State Patrol all responded to the scene. Southbound traffic on I-85 was at a standstill while crews cleared the scene.

Georgia State Patrol is still investigating the accident and has not released additional information at this time. None of the people involved has been identified, and the cause of the collision is not yet known.
