Charges Pending Against Driver Who Caused Fatal Five-Vehicle Crash in Richmond Hill

RICHMOND HILL, GA. – ( According to an online news report from, a driver is facing charges for causing a fatal five-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Richmond Hill, Georgia.*

Five vehicles collided on I-95 South near mile marker 87, by the Highway 17 exit in Richmond Hill. The crash involved two tractor-trailers and three passenger vehicles. Georgia State Patrol reports the driver of a tractor-trailer traveling southbound on I-95 failed to brake for slowed traffic ahead and swerved into the center lane in an effort to avoid a collision. The driver then struck a second tractor-trailer, causing it to spin and collide with several passenger vehicles. 

An SUV and the second tractor-trailer caught on fire after colliding with each other, and the driver of the SUV died on the scene. A passenger in the SUV was transported to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, with burn injuries. Another SUV flipped over a concrete barrier and landed on the train tracks below the interstate. The driver of this SUV was able to get out of the vehicle on her own. 

Authorities indicate that in total, five people were transported to nearby hospitals. The extent of their injuries and their current conditions are unknown at this time. None of the people involved in the collision has been identified, but authorities now indicate charges are pending against the driver of the first tractor-trailer. 

Crews worked to clear the crash from the afternoon on July 26 into the early morning hours of July 27. All southbound lanes of the interstate reopened around 1:30 a.m. 

Georgia State Patrol and the Richmond Hill Police Department are investigating the accident and have not yet provided additional details to the public.
