Waymo Self-Driving Cars Reach 25,000 Miles Per Day Traveled

July 30, 2018

July 23, 2018 ( As reported on, the autonomous vehicle technology company Waymo has hit a few milestones lately with its self-driving vehicles, including reaching 25,000 miles traveled per day.*

Waymo is owned by Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, and has been working toward a self-driving commercial ridesharing service for several years. Waymo CEO John Krafcik recently announced that the company’s autonomous test vehicles have now reached 8 million miles driven and are covering 25,000 miles a day.

The vehicle testing has taken place mostly in California, where Waymo and Google are headquartered, but testing has also occurred in Arizona, Georgia, Texas, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The company will launch a ridesharing service later this year in Phoenix, Arizona, as the state of Arizona has some of the most relaxed laws for autonomous vehicle testing.

The milestone of 8 million miles driven comes just one month after Waymo’s vehicles hit 7 million miles driven. This means that in eight months, the company has doubled its vehicle mileage pace — it was sitting at 4 million miles driven in November. Krafcik says that in addition to the testing on public roads, Waymo self-driving cars have driven 5 billion miles in simulated environments.

For the most part, Waymo uses Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans for its autonomous technology. The company just completed a deal with Chrysler to buy 62,000 of these vehicles during the next several years. It will also buy 20,000 Jaguar I-Pace electric SUVs. Krafcik says Waymo’s technology can be outfitted into many vehicles to perform many functions. A specific launch date for the Phoenix ridesharing service has not yet been announced.
