Authorities Questioning Trucker in Macon County Pedestrian Fatality

July 30, 2018

MACON COUNTY, GA. – July 23, 2018 (13wmaz.com) Authorities are questioning a trucker who might be responsible for a pedestrian fatality that occurred July 23 in Macon County, Georgia. An article on 13wmaz.com has the details.*

In the early morning hours of July 13, emergency response found the body of 17-year-old J’aire Maxie on Highway 26 in Macon County. He had been run over by a vehicle. No other people or cars were in the area at the time. Macon County Coroner Brenda Oglesby said Maxie had been lying flat on the roadway when he was hit by a vehicle.

Later on in the same morning, Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol say they were approached by a truck driver who said he might have run over someone. Georgia State Patrol reports the driver is currently being held in jail for questioning. They did not identify the driver.

Troopers say they are trying to ascertain whether the trucker is connected to this incident and whether he fled the scene. No charges have been announced at this time. The investigation is ongoing, and no additional details have yet been released to the public.

In 2015, the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Injury Prevention Program examined data regarding pedestrian deaths in the state of Georgia from 2008 to 2012. The data showed Macon-Bibb County among the deadliest for pedestrians in the state of Georgia. Per capita, 3.86 pedestrians died per every 100,000 people in Macon-Bibb County during the five-year period. This made Macon-Bibb County the second-deadliest county for pedestrians in the state. Only Burke County had a higher rate of pedestrian deaths per capita.
