Police Arrest Brazilian Plastic Surgeon After Patient Death

July 26, 2018

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – July 20, 2018 (gpbnews.org) A so-called celebrity plastic surgeon from Brazil was arrested July 19 in connection with the death of one of his patients, according to an online report from gpbnews.com.*

Denis Cesar Barros Furtado, 45, known to fans as “Dr. Bumbum,” spent five days on the run after something went wrong during an injection procedure he performed on one of his patients. Furtado was reportedly injecting silicone (and potentially acrylic glass filler) into the buttocks of 46-year-old Lilian Calixto, when the patient suddenly experienced an abnormally fast heartrate (a condition known as tachycardia).

Furtado reportedly rushed Calixto to a nearby hospital then left the facility. Calixto, a bank manager in Brazil, died at the hospital. The exact cause of death is not known, but Furtado eluded authorities for five days until he was arrested on July 19 in Rio de Janeiro. Furtado and his attorney have denied any liability in Calixto’s death. Following his arrest, Furtado posted a video on Instagram, where his account has more than 600,000 followers, saying that he had safely performed 9,000 procedures like the one he performed on Calixto.

These injection procedures are legal in Brazil, but the president of the Regional Medical Council of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Niveo Steffen, said the county has experienced a “growing invasion of non-specialists” in the field of cosmetic surgery. “You cannot perform plastic surgery inside an apartment,” Steffen said. “Many people are selling a dream, a fantasy to patients in an unethical way, and people, weakened, are attracted to low prices, without considering whether or not the conditions are adequate.”

Investigation into the death of Calixto is ongoing.
