Georgia Woman Hit by Car, Loses Leg While Aiding Florida Accident Victim

July 26, 2018

COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL. – July 21, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a Georgia woman who stopped to help people involved in a vehicle accident on Interstate 75 in Florida was hit by a car and sadly lost one of her legs.*

On the afternoon of July 18, at approximately 3:15 p.m., 36-year-old Atira Marshall, of Decatur, Georgia, was driving southbound on Interstate 75 during a rainstorm in Columbia County, Florida. She saw a vehicle accident and pulled over to help the person involved. Another report from indicates a Kia was facing north in a southbound lane of the interstate, and Marshall was checking on the driver of the Kia. As she was trying to assist the Kia driver on the interstate, a 1998 Honda Civic struck her and severed her leg.

Florida Highway Patrol and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department were on scene and used tourniquets to try to reduce the bleeding. Marshall was then flown to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Marshall’s sister, Clea Georgia, reports that Marshall has undergone three surgical procedures and is in stable condition.

The driver of the Honda, 26-year-old Dylan Robitaille, of Gainesville, said she could not see the Kia or Marshall because of the heavy rain. Robitaille and a passenger in her vehicle were reportedly not injured. Investigation into the accident is ongoing. It is not clear what happened with the Kia prior to Marshall’s arrival or whether Florida authorities will pursue charges.

Marshall’s family has created a GoFundMe account to accept donations that will help Marshall pay for medical expenses and living expenses while she recovers.
