Tanker Truck Explodes at California Kaiser Permanente Campus

July 24, 2018

SANTA ROSA, CA. – July 18, 2018 ( According to an online news report on, a tanker truck carrying liquid oxygen experienced a leak July 18 that caused an explosion at a Kaiser Permanente Medical campus in California.*

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on July 18, firefighters in Santa Rosa, California, responded to a call about an explosion and fire on the Kaiser Permanente North Medical campus. A Matheson tanker truck carrying cryogenic oxygen experienced a leak that ignited and caused an explosion. Firefighters from the Santa Rose Fire Department were able to quickly extinguish the fire but had difficulty controlling the leak. It took nearly two hours to contain the leaking oxygen.

No patient or medical staff member was injured, but the Matheson driver of the tanker truck was hospitalized with unknown injuries. Matheson is an industrial and medical gas supplier, according to fire officials. Initial reports indicated the truck had crashed into a building, but authorities clarified later that there had been no crash. Fire officials believe something went wrong with a connection as the truck’s tank delivered the oxygen to an on-site tank. The truck was largely undamaged, but the back of the vehicle appeared to be burned.

The entire campus at Kaiser North was evacuated as a precaution. Buses and ambulances transported employees and patients away from the facility.

“It sounded like the start of an earthquake,” said Kaiser employee Jenna Ausiello. “That’s what I thought was happening. The windows shook … it was just a big boom.”

Officials are still conducting an investigation into the incident, but Kaiser expects no further disruption to services at the campus.
