Three-Vehicle Collision in Columbia County, Georgia Results in Minor Injuries

COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA. – July 18, 2018 (wrdw.com) As reported by wrdw.com, a three-vehicle accident in Columbia County, Georgia, resulted in minor injuries to one person. The collision also backed up traffic along Interstate 20.*

The accident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. on Interstate 20 East in Columbia County. Authorities say a line of cars was merging onto I-20 from Lewiston Road, and a BMW rear-ended a Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado then hit the back of a Nissan Altima. The driver of the BMW complained of minor injuries, including head, back, and neck pain. It is not clear whether he or she was transported to a medical facility for treatment or was treated on-scene. 

None of the drivers has been identified at this time, and no other injuries have been reported. The right lane of I-20 at Exit 190 was reportedly blocked for about 45 minutes while crews cleared the scene. Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol are investigating the collision and have not yet released any additional information. 

Columbia County is located on the eastern border of the state of Georgia, in between Lincoln and Richmond counties. According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, the number of annual vehicle accidents in Columbia County saw a sharp increase in 2016. 

Prior to 2016, the county was the site of approximately 350 vehicle accidents each year, leading to around 50 injuries and 7 to 15 fatalities. In 2016, however, the total number of accidents skyrocketed to 4,051. The accidents in 2016 led to 972 injuries and 17 fatalities. About 70 percent of the fatal accidents in 2016 were related to alcohol consumption or speeding.
