Georgia Couple Injured in Montana Pedestrian Accident

July 17, 2018

WHITEFISH, MT. – July 17, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, two people from Georgia were seriously injured July 14 after being hit by a vehicle in northwest Montana.*

A 55-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man from Marietta, Georgia, were reportedly walking in downtown Whitefish, Montana, when they were struck by a vehicle. According to local authorities, the driver of the vehicle, 56-year-old Jim French, rapidly accelerated his Mustang GT in heavy traffic and lost control of the car.

Both the woman and the man, who have not been identified at this time, were hospitalized with serious injuries. Their current medical conditions are not known. Reports indicate the man had become impaled on a tree branch after being struck by French’s car.

It does not appear French was injured. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, negligent vehicular assault, and reckless driving. He is currently being held in the Flathead County Jail. It is not clear whether he has yet hired or been appointed an attorney.

The Whitefish Police Department is still investigating the collision and has not released additional information to the public at this time.

In 2013, according to information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4,735 pedestrians in the United States were killed in traffic crashes. This figure represents 14 percent of the total traffic fatalities that year in the U.S. On average that year, a pedestrian was injured every eight minutes in a traffic collision, and a pedestrian died every two hours from a vehicle crash. Alcohol consumption  — on the part of either the driver or the pedestrian — was a factor in almost half of the 2013 pedestrian fatality crashes.
