Two Semi-Trucks Collide at Georgia-South Carolina Border

July 20, 2018

AIKEN COUNTY, SC. – July 12, 2018 (wrdw.com) Two semi-trucks collided July 12 near the Georgia-South Carolina border, according to an online report from wrdw.com. Both drivers were injured.*

The crash occurred around 3 a.m. on Interstate 20 West. Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol say one semi lost control and overturned right near the border between Georgia and South Carolina. A second semi then crashed into the overturned semi near Exit 1 (Martintown Road). Neither of the drivers has been identified, but both were reportedly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Tow truck driver Blaine Carter witnessed the crash and was nearly involved in it. He said he was driving on I-20 across the river into South Carolina and saw a semi-truck crash through the median on the interstate and onto his side of the road. Carter slammed on the brakes, then watched another semi-truck crash into the overturned semi that was stretched across the roadway.

Carter got out of his truck and started using a flashlight to alert other motorists to the wreck. He then heard someone calling out and ran to one of the trucks. The driver was inside, saying he was trapped and needed help. His legs were pinned by the dash, and the steering wheel was pressing against his chest, Carter said.

“I had never seen someone looking at me like that asking for help,” Carter said. “I couldn’t let the guy sit there, so I just started ripping the dash off piece by piece and eventually ripped the seat out and got him out of there.”

Both semi drivers were injured in the crash and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The South Carolina Highway Patrol indicates the driver of the first semi (the one that overturned) is being charged with driving too fast for conditions.
