Vehicle Crash Brings Down Traffic Lights at Smyrna Intersection

SMYRNA, GA. – July 13, 2018 ( A two-vehicle crash on July 13 brought down traffic lights at a busy intersection in Smyrna, Georgia, according to an online news report from* 

A collision between two vehicles downed the hanging traffic lights at the intersection of Windy Hill Road and South Cobb Drive in Smyrna, Georgia. Reports indicate one person was injured in the crash and transported to a local hospital for treatment. This person, who has not been identified, is said to be in stable condition. 

The accident occurred in the afternoon of July 13 and affected rush-hour traffic in the area. Authorities shut down the intersection to all traffic for several hours as crews restrung the lights. By that evening, the lights were up and running again, and normal traffic was able to resume. 

Authorities are still investigating the vehicle collision, and few details have been released at this time. It is not clear how the accident occurred or how it caused the traffic lights to fall at the Smyrna intersection. 

Smyrna is located in Cobb County in the northern portion of the state of Georgia. According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Cobb County is the site of numerous vehicle accidents each year, and its annual accident totals are growing. In 2012, a total of 11,767 vehicle accidents occurred in Cobb County, leading to 2,860 injuries and 47 deaths. By 2016, those numbers had increased to 34,985 total accidents, 8,470 injuries, and 59 deaths. During both 2012 and 2016, more than half of the fatality accidents in Cobb County were related to speeding or alcohol consumption.
